Patriotic Trifle

Every 4th of July weekend [sans the one when Coach & I got married] my mom's side of the family gets together for a reunion at the family farm.  My great-grandfather began this tradition before my mom was born and while it has evolved over the years the basis is the same: we meet on Saturday, eat copious amounts of fried chicken, mashed potatoes & macaroni and cheese and spend time with family.  For now FIVE generations have indulged in this family tradition and when CH and I add to the family tree it will make six!

Now that we "adults" we are expected to contribute to the food fest and each a couple of years ago I drew the dessert stick.  The first year I made a strawberry pie but switched it up to this delicious 4th of July themed sweet treat!

Ingredients:
Angel food cake {last year I baked one from scratch but this year I made one from a box...don't tell my Mamwaw}
Strawberries, hulled & sliced into fourths
Blueberries
Large tub of Cool Whip--softened

  1. Cut the cake into bite-sized chunks & layer on the bottom of a trifle bowl
  2. Layer strawberries on top of cake
  3. Sprinkle a layer of blueberries on top of the strawberries
  4. Spread a thin layer of Cool Whip
  5. Repeat until you are at the top of your bowl
  6. On the top layer of Cool Whip place blueberries & a couple of strawberries
  7. Store in the fridge until ready to serve

Happy 4th of July!
